In the library at Lancaster Gate, a minute book of the Football Association confirms that on 12th December , the modern Fulham Football Club was born. Like most small clubs of the era, Fulham had a nomadic existence in their early days. The history of this idyllically located venue actually dates back much further than The original Craven Cottage, a thatched building surrounded by gardens within the Bishops Palace, was the family home of Anne Boleyn and provided the nickname The Cottagers. It is named after its builder, Lord Cottage. Not really. It was built by Lord Craven in

For most British sports fans clay is what you make pots or pigeons out of – not something you want messing up a perfectly good game of tennis. But a club in Isleworth – one of the few in this country to boast clay courts – wants to help us fall in love with the red dust which is so ubiquitous in the rest of Europe. Members of Konstanz Tennis Club, in the picturesque city of Konstanz, near the Swiss border, visited their English counterparts last summer to exchange tips on court maintenance and other matters.
They returned the favour by inviting St Mary’s chairman Alan Mockford to see their facilities earlier this month. It’s the surface on which all the top players learned to play and on which the majority of outdoor professional tournaments are played. If he had not moved he would probably not be a professional tennis player now.
Mr Mockford hopes the partnership with Konstanz Tennis Club will encourage more Londoners to swap the genteel, strawberries and cream scented world of lawn tennis for the bruising intensity and biting spin of its clay cousin. To help young players develop a taste for the red stuff, Konstanz is offering free accommodation to youngsters and their accompanying guardians from St Mary’s and other local clubs wanting to enter the international juniors tournament it hosts every August.
As well as the chance to compete, eight to year-olds will be able to train on the club’s 13 clay courts. Scottish tennis ace Andy Murray is set to light up Hurlingham Club in Fulham when he joins the line-up this summer. Mice and cockroach infestations were among other alarming findings at the 11 restaurants in Hounslow to be awarded zero stars in the national Food Hygiene Ratings scheme last year. Alex has informally performed many of the duties of a club historian in the past, and this new position is a recognition of the dedication and detail with which he devotes himself to accurately transcribing, researching and recording the history of Fulham Football Club. Alex is the author of several Fulham history books such as Fulham F. In December , Alex attended his first Fulham match.
He has not stopped attending since. A lifelong Fulham fan, he has been a regular at Craven Cottage since , and still has a season ticket in the Hammersmith End. I love coming to Craven Cottage, surely the best ground in English football. I have been lucky enough to see many great players appear for Fulham over the years since the sixties when I first attended. It has been very enjoyable researching the history of the club much of which can nowadays be done online through various websites.
I also possess a large collection of Fulham related photos, programmes plus reports on most matches that have been played by the Club. In this way, he has further helped to strengthen the bonds between the Club and the local community. We are very pleased that he may now continue that excellent work in an official capacity. His passion for the Club and, in particular, the heritage of Fulham FC, make him the ideal person to be the official Club historian.

Clubs up and down the top-flight have already begun planning for next season with new signings, new kits and everything that comes with a fresh season. Of course, things will still look a little different with the start of the new campaign delayed due to the break in the last one, but soon football will be all caught up with next term set to finish in its usual conclusion month of May. Next season will have a much stricter finish with Euro – which has already been pushed back a year – set to kick off in June.

This part of Fulham Road traverses what was formerly an old settlement called Little Chelsea, which lay also on the south side of the road in the parish of Chelsea proper. Why a settlement grew up at this particular part of the road is not known, or at what date. The first known references are in the early seventeenth century. Titled names occur, with Sir John Griffin at a house near the southern end of Seymour Walk and Sir James Smith in Chelsea, but the area seems quite early to have had the mixed character it retained into the nineteenth century.
