It was a disaster. The collection was so buggy and broken, Halo developer Industries has spent the past few years fixing its many, many issues. Today that apology tour finally arrives on PC with Halo: Reach, the release of a Xbox game. I played it on Steam alongside , other people who are, clearly, excited to play a Halo game on PC again. Good news for all of us: Reach looks great, feels great, and has almost everything I’d want out of a PC port. It’s the opposite of the Master Chief Collection’s terrible debut. After a few hours of testing the campaign and multiplayer, I’m confident that this nails the fundamentals of a good PC port.

McGuire, a year-old project engineer from Grand Haven, Michigan, saw it as a way to revisit his favorite game series, and rekindle a romance that started more than a decade before with Halo: Combat Evolved. McGuire is a hardcore devotee of the franchise. As a student at Michigan State University, he sold an old guitar and bought an Xbox and a copy of Halo 2 to stay competitive with his friends. They played Halo 3 for years, devouring the map packs and using the game to stay in touch after graduation.
And so he was beyond stoked to hear about The Master Chief Collection. It was to be a rabid fan’s dream come true, a one-and-done single-disc “box set” including high-definition remasters of Halo and Halo 2 and improved versions of Halo 3 and Halo 4. Best of all, the beloved online multiplayer of all four games would be served up in a mix-and-match sashimi platter of shotguns, snipers, energy swords, and battle rifles. Everything looked great, and the early word was Microsoft had done it right.

Some features may be missing from this version. View Full Version : Hopefully we will have an updated matchmaking system! Gone should be the days where one player can decide the faith of others by deciding who gets to play, which team they should be in and what kind of settings you are allowed. Allow in-game join in.
I’ve downloaded all the content for the MCC but when I go to play Reach – Multiplayer or Campaign, it just says missing content. “missing content” comes up no matter what I try to play (campaign, matchmaking, firefight, etc).

It received nary a patch or useful update and left diehard fans scrambling to patch it into decent shape. Simply pick the game’s “cheat detection disabled” option upon boot and you can fiddle with every relevant file within a “friends-only” online sandbox, which is fair enough. In spite of some imperfections at launch, Halo Reach ‘s PC version is already a testament to a new attitude at Microsoft about PC gaming. Since Halo Reach is pretty well known, this article focuses squarely on what’s new or different in this PC port. For one, Reach has arrived on Windows PCs by itself, which may surprise anyone who sees that it’s part of the Halo: Master Chief Collection— as in the anthology that landed on Xbox One in with a crushing, bug-filled thud but was eventually patched to a pretty shining state, complete with Xbox One X support.
Why is this anthology only one game strong on PC, when it’s up to six games on Xbox One consoles? Xbox Game Studios has made clear that this piecemeal launch on PC is intentional.

When my son starts matchmaking in Halo Reach, it says “missing a recommended downloadable content” and offers to take us to the Marketplace. I gave my son a Live Gold membership just so he could play this game online so i want to make sure that we have the updated version of the game. He should still be able to enjoy Reach , but his matchmaking options will be limited. Market place is actually the name of the Xbox live marketplace where you can purchase stuff.

For those of you that haven’t played it yet and care about audio fidelity at all I’m just going to save you a lot of time and say ‘don’t bother’. For my books this is the worst sounding video game I’ve heard outside of those bad Genesis emulators. Sounds is drenched in booming bass, distorts, missing entire channels of sound and the mids and highs are completely inaudible. Want to hear the NPCs dialogue?
For the most part you can forget, one in 10 sentances come in loud and clear. But the guns sound good right? I mean they might, I couldn’t tell you, I haven’t heard my gun once. The worst part about is Microsoft and acknowledged this issue after launch and clearly knew about it ahead of time but pushed the game out anways.
Please refer to this official statement. It will take some time to work through solutions to improve the overall experience for audio and that work is already underway. When it is ready, we will flight to test the fixes we can make prior to updating the title. We also plan to go into more detail on our Reach audio journey in a later blog. Consider this post a warning for anyone looking to try this fantastic game for the first time, in this state I would not recommend it at all.
Multiplayer might be functional but if you want to play the story the state of the audio is far far far too distracting.
